Orizaba ALPS Mountaineering Trail Pack ReviewSunday, September 27, 2009 19:28
The Orizaba ALPS Mountaineering trail backpack is the sister of the Mojave ALPS pack and is a great full-featured trail pack. The Orizaba retails for about $15 less than the Mojave and is slightly smaller. While the Mojave has 4500 cu. in. of space inside the Orizaba has only 3900 cu. in. This of course cuts down on the weight of the pack, giving it a total weight of 3 lbs. 12 oz. The Orizaba is designed for shorter hikes, however shares most of the features of the Mojave pack. The pack is constructed of durable but light-weight rugged ripstop nylon along with a high-density polyethylene framesheet, an aluminum rod is specifically shaped to transfer weight load to the hip belt giving this pack great support.
Like the Mojave, the adjustable suspension in these packs provides for a comfortable personalized fit; padded waist belt, back panel and shoulder straps provide comfort for long trips. The Orizaba also has a lower zippered section to allow access to items during a hike without setting down the pack. Also, like the Mojave, this pack has a hydration pocket which allows you to carry enough water to keep you hydrated all during your hike. There is a large mesh front pocket, as well as side mesh pockets with bungy cord to store small items. Zippered lid pocket, 2 side mesh pockets as well as a large front mesh pocket provide for easy access to essential trail items such as snacks, GPS unit or maps.
The back panel has an air channel mesh pad which provides ventilation as temperatures rise. While the Mojave ALPS Mountaineering Trail Pack specs are designed for torsos 13" -20.5", the recommended torso size for this pack is at least 17" long and the pack fits waist sizes 27"-50" Also like its sister pack, the Orizaba has a extend-able spindrift collar so you can "over-pack". However the compression strap over the top keeps everything contained. Front zippered access to a sleeping bag compartment allows the hiker to get to his sleeping bag without digging through the rest of the pack. Compression straps, as well as stabilizing the load can provide a spot to strap a jacket.

Rating (out of 10)
A very durable and smaller alternative to the Mojave
Value for the money
A great deal for the money!
The pack weighs out at roughly 3 lbs 12 oz, so a lighter alternative to the Mojave
The Orizaba is flexible offering adjustable torso, suspension and detachable mini packs like the Mojave
Best pack for intermediate hikes?
For hikes 3-7 days long this is definitely one of the best options.
